More on Mt. St. Louis Moonstone’s Improvements

I recently mentioned that Mt. St. Louis Moonstone, a popular ski area here in Ontario, had added a new lift. I recently received some additional details courtesy of Ski and Snowboard Canada’s newsletter:
“Their most recent projects will amaze everyone who visits the day ticket facility with the erection of a new high-speed six-person chair which [...]

Mount St. Louis Moonstone Has A New Lift

Local news for the Ontario riders: Mount St. Louis Moonstone has made some big improvements for the 2007-2008 season. Gone are the creaky Timberline and Stretcher chairs, replaced with a high-speed “Summit Six Express” lift. The Stretcher run has also been widened and re-graded, and they now have the “largest beginner terrain in the area” [...]

UPDATED: Blue Mountain Scales Down Mountain Biking

Poking through the Blue Mountain website today I found a slightly cryptic letter about the resort canceling a mountain bike event and ‘de-tuning’ certain trails/areas.
“We have been experiencing difficulties in influencing the appropriate risk taking behavior,” the letter says, adding it is making the transition into a “more controlled access facility”. The letter mentioned several [...]

Local News: Mount St. Louis Moonstone Prepares for New Lift

Moonstone’s website is short on details, but it now reports:
“Mount St Louis Moonstone continues to make improvements with the removal of the Timberline double & Stretcher triple chair lifts. Preparation is under way for the arrival of anotherSix-Person Express Chair Lift!!!”
This is good news. The Timberline and Stretcher chairs were pretty slow. To be honest, [...]

Riding in Ontario: There’s Still Time

Looks like this is your last weekend to ride in Ontario:
- Blue Mountain will close April 9. Currently, there are 14 runs open.- Hoseshoe will close April 8. Currently, there are 8 runs open. And amazingly, they are reporting 15cm of new snow (it just got reeeally cold here in Ontario).
Go, go, go!!

A Follow-Up to the Bad Conditions in Ontario

As you may recall, November, December and early January were an absolute disaster for ski hill operators here in Ontario. Extremely warm and rainy conditions decimated most ski resorts, forcing them to operate well below capacity and in some cases even close down temporarily.
Since then, business and conditions have improved significantly. In fact, I don’t [...]

Night Riding at Blue Mountain

Those of you keeping score at home have probably noticed I haven’t talked about my snowboarding experiences lately. In fact, if you’ve been keeping careful score, you’ve probably noticed I don’t seem to have gone riding since my Whistler vacation. Well, I finally went last night. I can’t believe it took me a month to [...]

Were Those Snowboarding Jumps I Saw?

If you live in Toronto, you probably know you can get a good view of the North York Ski Centre from the Sheppard Avenue bridge that spans the valley the Centre is located in. I usually crane my neck as I go by to get a good view, just to see how busy it is [...]

Nice: Rail Jam in NYC

Live in New York City? You gotta check this out:
“On Thursday, some of the world’s top pro riders including Marc Frank
Montoya, Danny Kass and Eddie Wall will compete head-to-head in Union
Square Park for a prize purse of $30,000.”
Details at First Tracks Online. I wish we did this sort of stuff in Toronto. Every January, we [...]

Blue Mountain Opens ‘The Orchard’

In late July, I made brief mention of an area on the north end of Blue Mountain that has been designated for ‘future expansion’ forever. It turns out Blue Mountain refers to that area as ‘The Orchard’, and they’re opening it today, for one day only. I suppose the area must be serviceable by a [...]
