Ontario Ski Resorts Celebrate ‘Fantastic’ Winter

The Barrie Examiner recently published an article featuring interviews with staff from several Southern Ontario ski areas. All of them seemed to agree that the 2008-2009 winter season had some amazing weather, which led to a pretty long season for most. Interestingly, at least one closed for the season due to apathy rather than a [...]

10 Days

I’ve only had 10 days on the mountain this winter.
With upcoming work travel, a warm-weather vacation, and spring on the way I’m not sure I’ll even match last year’s total of 15.
This is not good. It is NOT highly obsessed behaviour!

Cypress Mountain Taking Olympic Heat

Ouch. It looks like the World Cup ski and snowboarding events held at Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain over the past couple of weeks did not garner many rave reviews from fans or athletes. Cypress will host a variety of snowboard and ski events during the 2010 Olympic games.
Over at the Toronto Star, Olympic blogger Randy Starkman [...]

To the Extreme: Top 10 Extreme Runs

Hey, sorry for the radio silence. A busy personal schedule and hectic couple of weeks of work, mixed with some business travel, have conspired to keep me from the blog. But I’m back.
Let’s start with an article I came across this week on the top 10 most extreme runs worldwide. These are sanctioned runs you [...]

Here Come the Moms

Many kids can’t avoid their moms while shredding any more, as moms get into the sport, too. Uh-oh. Read the details here.

Canadian Snowboarders Clean Up At Worlds

Canada had a good showing at a couple of snowboarding events while I was in Whistler:

Long-time shredder Jasey-Jay Anderson won gold in a world championship snowboarding giant slalom event. Matthew Morison, another Canadian (from Ontario, actually), won bronze. Get the details here.
At the same event, which took place in South Korea, another Ontario boy, Jeff [...]

Snowboarders at Taos: One Year Later

The New York Times has a good article here which looks at Taos, a New Mexico ski resort, a year after finally letting shredders on the slopes. The article’s conclusion? Everyone seems pretty kumbaya.
You can check out some of our previous coverage on ass-backwards resorts that ban snowboarders here.

Vancouver’s Olympic Village Meltdown

It appears there is quite a controversy brewing in Vancouver over the construction of an athlete’s village for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
The Seattle Times provides a succinct overview of what is going down here. It would appear that current economic conditions have left the village’s developers, and the city, in a financial bind.
Here’s hoping they [...]

Five Things That Should Be Banned

Boy, I just looked back at the title and realized I’m turning into a crotchety old man.
I was just flipping through this article on why electronic devices should be banned on the hill and thought, “that’s a good idea for an article.” Then I thought, “hell, there’s lots of things I think shouldn’t be allowed [...]

Nine Days to Whistler!

In nine days I’ll be on my way to Whistler for a six-day trip that is sure to involve copious amounts of beer and riding. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Whistler more times than I can remember, so I’ve actually lost track of how many visits I’ve made. I keep going back because I [...]
