Deep Snowboarding Thoughts

If you’re a frequent visitor to this site, you probably noticed a couple of cosmetic changes - namely the highly inspirational Jake Burton quote at the top. The quote made me think: what other quotes, funny or otherwise, are floating around the Internet? The answer: too many to count, but I’ll share a few [...]

Burton: The Evolution of the Snowboard

I was poking around Burton’s website pretty extensively today, and came across something really cool: Burton’s own snowboard photo history. The 1977 fiberglass prototype is pretty crazy; imagine hurtling yourself down a mountain without bindings. It’s also amazing to see how long boards stayed pointed, kind of like old-school skis. Definitely worth a visit to [...]

Colorado Digs Out… Again

Colorado’s Keystone resort is reportedly going to open a week early because of the blizzards that have been smoking the state recently. Schools have been closed and highways have been blocked, but anyone with a snowboard or pair of skis seems to be pretty damn excited. New West Network’s SnowBlog has some additional coverage.

Snowboarding Bits and Pieces

I have a whole bunch of things to say, none of which really warrant an individual blog post. So, I will consolidate!

It’s officially “It’s Snowing Everywhere But Here and I’m Going to Whine About It” season. We all know what’s up in Colorado, which is getting tons of snow. It’s started snowing a fair bit [...]

Ski and Snowboard World Records Set Indoors

It looks like two world records were set last week at a UK indoor snowslope. First, a snowboarder set the record for longest rail slide at more than 39 meters - about 38 meters farther than I’ve ever gone on a rail. (Wait, have I even tried rails?)
After the snowboarders came the skiers, and a [...]

Jeremy Jones is a Nice Guy

The Denver Post ran a nice interview recently with Jeremy Jones, one of the most famous big mountain snowboarders in the world. The article is an interesting contrast in riders: Jones, a hardcore big mountain rider, thrives on catapulting down extremely steep slopes at high speeds. The author, while an avid snowboarder, is completely happy [...]

The iPod Turns 5

Snowboarders everywhere are celebrating the iPod’s fifth birthday, which takes place Monday. If it wasn’t for the iPod, many riders would be stuck talking to strangers on lifts, chatting with friends on the slopes, and generally being slightly more social. Thanks to the magic of portable music technology, however, snowboarders no longer rely on friends [...]

On Teaser Trailer Creativity

Have a look at this teaser trailer from Teton Gravity Research:

This is one of several trailers available for Anomaly, a new snowboarding/skiing movie from Teton Gravity Research. Nevermind that the movie looks great - I just want to give them a thumbs up for their teaser creativity. I think the one above is very creative. [...]

More on the UK Snowboarding Scene

In July I published a brief tirade about Great Britain’s decision to cut funding to Olympic riders despite an improved showing in Turin. This post at Afterbang got me thinking about the UK scene a little more, as I’ve noticed more news, movies, photos and blogs coming from across the pond in recent months. It [...]

Colorado Resorts Race to Open

It may be a balmy 20 degrees here in Toronto, but out in Colorado the race is on to see which ski resort can open first. The competitiors appear to be Loveland, Arapahoe Basin and Silverton Mountain, all of whom seem to be optimistic about opening within the next week or two. With high elevations [...]
