In a similar vein as the Burton Love snowboard scuffle, students at a Colorado high school recently had to deal with their own case of censorship – and they won.
Some students at the school had a logo decal on their cars from Grenade Gloves. The logo is simply a grenade silhouette. School administrators said that the logos were a symbol of terrorism and that if they were not removed, students would face tickets and perhaps other forms of discipline. The students made it clear that the logo was that of a snowboarding glove company and that even some teachers sported the logo on their cars, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.
The students took their case to the Student Press Law Center which provides students with legal assistance free of charge in free speech cases. It did not take long for the administration to back down and withdraw their request that the decals be removed.
Perhaps the funniest part is that a school district spokesperson said that the students did as they were taught – to speak up when they are being treated unfairly and that their protests can effect change. The board took credit for the kids idea to stand up to the board… the nerve!
I saw the school’s perspective until I read Grenade Gloves slogan: Make Gloves, Not War. That’s clever enough for me to withdraw any complaints. Grenade Gloves company president and snowboard legend Danny Kass is very proud of the teens and sent them a whole whack of logo stickers.
The article I read can be found at broadbansports.com or just link to it here.
I’m a bit ashamed to work for a school board myself.
thats rediculous that the school was flippin out about a grenade logo
i’m glad that the students won
grenade gear rocks
I agree. I’m sure the school should be focussing their attention on more serious concerns like drug use, drop-outs or violence. If this is indeed their biggest problem, it must be the best school on earth.
