Snowboarding

First Turns Imminent: Ontario Is Open for Business!

It’s been downright snowy and freezing here in Ontario for about a week or so. For many ski areas here, that’s more than plenty of time to make some snow, cut some runs and get the hills open in at least some sort of limited capacity. As a result, I’m sitting here at 6:30 in the morning with my snowboard pants and toque on, getting ready to head up to Mt. St. Louis Moonstone, which is operating with six lifts, three runs and a terrain park today.

Although not my favourite hill in Ontario, my first turns seem to always be at Moonstone, because the always seem to open earlier than Blue Mountain. This year is no different. Moonstone opened yesterday, and Blue doesn’t plan to open until November 28th. Operationally, I suppose there’s only a difference of two or three days, but still; for a business that’s entirely seasonal, wouldn’t Intrawest (Blue Mountain’s parent company) be interested in maximizing as much revenue as possible? Surely Blue could operate on a skeleton staff with limited runs. I think plenty of people would still show up, including myself.

Anyway, regardless — I’m outta here at 7am to pick up Steve, and maybe Josh if he isn’t dead to the world (he ain’t feeling so hot). More later!

Discussion

  1. I am indeed dead to the world and pretty sad that Icouldn’t come along. I tuned my new bindings last night and I was giddy at the thought of riding again. But I felt terrible and still do today.

Cant’ wait to hear how it went. Hopefully good, but y’ know, not TOO good ;)
