Are Women Are More Prone to ACL Tears? The Answer is a Resounding YES
Are women more prone to torn ACL injuries?
According to a litany of articles, the answer is a resounding yes.
- According to a recent article The Guardian, some women in their 20s never fully recover, even after successful surgery.
- A source in this ESPN.COM article surmises women are twice as susceptible than men to suffer an ACL injury. Kee1.com says women are actually eight times more likely to tear their ACL.
But why? There doesn’t seem to be any cohesive answer, though this New York Times article blames anatomy.
These statistics are shocking. I had no idea there was a problem, let alone this bad.
We definitely got the short end on this one. Multiple knee injuries for me.
My girlfriend has dislocated her knee several times and claims girls are more susceptable to knee dislocations. Possibly related.
If you don’t mind sharing, which technique and tissue source did you choose for your ACLr? I’m having to make the same difficult choice now, and I’m interested in your response. I blew my left ACL out while in the new “Stash” terrain park at Killington. I want to get back to biking and boarding, and I want to make sure that I choose wisely when it comes to surgery.
For those of us who hope to return to active lifestyles, there is no ‘official’ best way, but my doctor as well as my uncle who is an Orthopedic Surgeon and worked with the New England Patriots said the patellar tendon graft is favored for active lifestyles. I am happy to share my experience via blog, as I am on day 7 post-op from patellar tendon ACL reconstruction. Feel free to pass the site along to whoever may be interested!! http://acljourney.blogspot.com
Cheers!
