Ontario Snowboarding

Finally: Blue Mountain Will Expand Into The Orchard

Blue Mountain has re-launched their website for the winter season, and there’s an interesting note buried within. Visitors to the snow tubing area of the site are now greeted with this message:

“After years of enjoyment, the decision was made to close the Tube Town Snow Tubing Park.

Blue Mountain is getting prepared to embark on a much anticipated expansion into the Orchard area of the Resort. It was decided that Tube Town would close permanently to allow for the future development of additional trails and base lodge in that area. A project as large as the Orchard development takes years to come to fruition. The closing of Tube Town is one step in the planning process.”

The Orchard is an area on one side of the resort which, judging by Blue Mountain’s trail map, could likely sustain five or six additional runs. Given Blue Mountain is one of eastern Canada’s most popular ski resorts despite only 34 runs, the additional space would be most welcome. I find lineups and overcrowding to be a huge problem at Blue Mountain, yet keep going back because it has some of the best vertical in Ontario.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any additional details on what will be done or when. Suffice to say it will likely take a season or two once work begins, and will likely involve both facility and real estate expansion.

Blue Mountain has occasionally opened The Orchard in the past.
