First Road Ride: 42k in the Books

I just got back from my first solo road ride. It was a 42k jaunt from Richmond Hill, Ontario out west to Highway 50 (which is just west of Woodbridge) along Rutherford Road. 42k is nowhere near where I want to ultimately get this fall, but it was a start. It took me a couple of hours with a few short stops and one major break at the halfway point.

I originally thought Rutherford Road would be a great route because I recalled it being completely open and empty. My mistake. I was actually thinking of Langstaff Road, which is wide open but very short. The net result: I was riding alongside a hell of a lot of traffic for about 75% of the ride, which was not ideal. On the plus side, the roads were quite long and empty out by Highway 50, and the entire ride featured a ton of hills, which I figure can only be good practice.

I did the ride without bike shorts, gloves, an extra tube or a tool to help me in the case of any breakdowns. If I’m to do 80k next weekend like Steve would like, I’m going to have to gear up. But all in all, for a first ride on my own, I was a happy camper.
