Here’s why I wear a snowboarding helmet: I hit my head once a trip. Every single snowboarding trip I take includes an incident in some glades where I catch an edge, slam my head in the snow, and end up flat on my back emitting a sickly “unnnnghhhhh” noise. As a result, I wear a helmet. Simple as that.
But the topics of whether everyone should wear a helmet, or whether helmets are even effective, are constantly debated. Today, the Montreal Gazette ran an article to add to the “are helmets helpful?” article pile with a uniquely Canadian perspective. Among the tidbits within the article:
You know, maybe wearing a helmet should be mandatory, style be damned. After all, they’re generally mandatory for bikes.
I am exactly with you on the helmet thing. Once a trip I thank my lucky stars I am wearing a lid. Sometimes even with a brain bucket I get my bell rung. Anytime I see someone riding without a helmet I figure either they are way more skilled than I am, or they are very, very lucky and luck is better than skill, or they’re not trying hard enough. Best $110 worth of insurance I’ve ever bought.
Before we rush again with more restrictive legeslation - something thay may eventually require licences, governemnt training and then outright ban - consider some facts : Skiing/Snowboarding has a 0.69/million risk of death, bycycle is 7.1/million, boating 17/million, hiking 19/million - let us not go overboard each time there is an accident. After all - 585 hikers are injured for every snowboarded - perhaps we should legislate against hiking.
