Shaun White, X Games and More: Snowboarding News Roundup
Short post day today, as I didn’t have much time at the keyboard. Lots of news in the snowboarding world to report on, though:
- Shaun White and Burton Snowboards sign a 10 year endorsement deal: That’s pretty crazy. According to Burton’s press release, the partnership deal is the longest in the history of snowboarding. Two of snowboarding’s premier names hook up long term; sounds mutually beneficial. White’s quote is pretty funny: “”I started riding for Burton when I was seven years old and Jake’s support has always been there. We have some big plans for The White Collection and I can’t think of a better home for me for the future. Thanks again, Jake!” Also, can Shaun White get any more famous?
- Freeskiers are making skiing cool again: I think this is becoming apparent if you hang out in terrain parks these days. Good for skiing. Both skiing and snowboarding need each other to ensure the long-term survival of snowsports (along with a healthy dose of environmental awareness worldwide).
- Winter X Games get bigger and bigger: 1 million ESPN viewers, 100,000 spectators and over 250 athletes expected. Damn.
- Ever been to the famous Splitz Grill in Whistler? Now there’s one in Vancouver.
- While in Whistler, I got to ski under a cool tunnel just built on Upper Franz that connects riders to the Big Red Express. It reminded me that the tunnel was built because Whistler will be open for riding during the Olympics Cooool.
- Did you know Neko Case (of New Pornographers fame) lived in Vermont and likes to snowboard?
OK, I’m losing it. Time to sleep!
Re: freeskiers - in Mammoth this past weekend, we met a pair of skiers whose opinion was, “skiing was a dying sport till snowboarding came along,” and b/c of boarding the skiers started taking their skis into the parks, doing big air jumps/tricks like 1080s etc. I thought that was pretty cool - instead of the usual “us vs. them” attitude, skiers were giving us props. See? We CAN all just get along!
EXACTLY!
Now let’s all sing kumbaya.

I noticed a much larger percentage of skiers at Whistler than I normally see here in the mid-west or the mid-atlantic.
Also, generally when I see people doing absolutely crazy stuff in the park or pipe, its almost always somone on twin tip skis.
