Off to Jay Peak

Back Monday! Looks like it’s gonna snow at Jay.
In the meantime, here’s a trailer featuring a lot of eastern resorts and action.

Next Up: Jay Peak, Vermont

Ahhh Jay Peak. Known for having some of the best powder and glades in the east, it’s a place with great terrain and an extremely laid-back vibe. Unfortunately, the weather has sucked both times I’ve visited; the first time was freezing cold, the second time was warm and rainy. I’m hoping the third time’s the [...]

The Subaru in the Terrain Park

I have no idea what this is about, but… cool.

More People Heading to the (Potentially Dangerous) Backcountry

I admit it: despite having a blog dedicated to snowboarding, there are two things seriously lacking my riding repertoire. The first is terrain park abilities; I’m pretty damn good at freeriding, but I suck on boxes and rails. The second is backcountry experience. I hiked Whistler’s Flute Bowl once, but even that is totally inbounds. [...]

The Kick-Ass Perimeter Bus to Whistler

Based on last week’s trip, I’ve added some more insight to the Whistler Guide, including information on the Perimeter Bus, more accommodations and restaurants, and more insight on lift lines and crowds. But then a server hiccup wiped it out. So I’ll have to try again later.
Speaking of the Perimeter Bus, check out this letter [...]

Shaun White, X Games and More: Snowboarding News Roundup

Short post day today, as I didn’t have much time at the keyboard. Lots of news in the snowboarding world to report on, though:

Shaun White and Burton Snowboards sign a 10 year endorsement deal: That’s pretty crazy. According to Burton’s press release, the partnership deal is the longest in the history of snowboarding. Two of [...]

I, For One, Think Snowboarding Helmets are an Excellent Idea.

“Concussions suck” is the last quote in this article debating whether ski and snowboard helmets make a difference. I think the quote pretty much sums up how I feel about helmets. The article says that according to new research from the National Ski Area Association, the number of deaths on the slopes hasn’t dropped in [...]

Fistfights and Shredding: The Return to Whistler

I’m writing this from Vancouver airport’s Air Canada lounge courtesy of Elite Steve, who managed to get me in as a guest. I must say, these lounges are pretty sweet; free Internet, booze and cheese abound. I travel a fair bit, but not enough to make Elite. Dammit!

(Observational note: I appear to be the only person in here with six days worth of facial hair growth, a snowboarding t-shirt and a can of Canadian by my side. Everyone else appears to be well-dressed, shorn and drinking wine.)

I’m obviously en route home from my latest snowboarding adventure: Whistler. We arrived Thursday and left Monday night. We’re flying the red eye back because we wanted to get another day of riding in. Talk about Highly Obsessed!

Here’s what went down in Whistler.

On Our Way to Whistler

We’re off to Whistler until next Tuesday. Stay tuned for live updates, if I have an Internet connection in Whistler. We’re staying at the Tyndall Stone Lodge, which apparently has Internet access (and some great reviews), so I’m counting on some decent access while I’m there.
According to the alpine forecast, it doesn’t look like there’s [...]

The Unwritten Rules of Backcountry Riding

As delivered via this ABC news story on a couple that got stuck in the backcountry in a blizzard.

If you’re stuck in the backcountry and have a cell phone, for the love of all things holy call for help.  These folks, thinking they were superstars because one was a doctor and one was a nurse, [...]
