I have to hand it to you, our readers. You are making great comments and sending along fantastic articles. This post is based on yet another great comment, one from bry who points out in a comment that Burton is paying $5,000 to the best video documenting an instance of “poaching” — that is, snowboarding at a “skiers only” resort. Hit all four and you can win $20,000 if your videos are all winners.
Although the contest encourages breaking a resort’s rules, I suppose, they do have several “commandments”, including buying a lift ticket, staying inbounds, and generally not doing anything stupid.
According to this slightly dated article (2006) the four remaining “no snowboarders” resorts left are Deer Valley, Mad River Glen , Taos and Alta.
EDIT: And then there were three. Taos has announced snowboarders will be allowed on the hills in March, and according to NewWest.net, not everyone is happy about it:
I rode up Lift 2 in the afternoon with a man in a green wool hat and well-worn ski pants, and asked him what he thought. “I’ll tell you what I think. Those f***ing knuckle-draggers are gonna ruin this mountain. They’re gonna f*** up the lines, scrape all the snow off Blitz or anything steep, f*** up the bumps on Al’s. And you know they’re gonna be lying around the mountain like a bunch of god damn slobs,” he spat. He shook his head in disgust. “That’s the end of this mountain.”
WOW!
No word on whether the Burton promotion had anything to do with it, but the timing is pretty interesting.
Here’s an interview with Jake Burton on the topic.
