Eastern Snowboarding

Ski Area Openings in North America

It’s getting cold, and there’s a bit of snow up north around Barrie; otherwise, however, the weather outlook for ski resorts in Ontario isn’t great thus far.

Of course, around North America — hell, even down the highway — this isn’t the case. Check out all these anticipated openings:

  • Mont Tremblant: November 21
  • Sunshine Village: November 15
  • Lake Louise: November 10 (it’s worth noting that Alberta is getting lots of snow now)
  • Kicking Horse: December 14
  • Whistler Blackcomb: November 21
  • Crested Butte: November 25 (free until December 15 from what I understand. Nice article on traveling to Crested Butte with family here)
  • Vail: November 16
  • Jackson Hole: December 1
  • Aspen: November 22
  • Holiday Valley (yes, that Holiday Valley in western New York): November 25

So when will things open here in Ontario? Ha! It’s way too early to predict. Stupid Ontario weather.

  1. Alberta getting lots of snow? I beg to differ my friend. Sunshine has delayed opening by a week. Louise is “making snow 24 hours a day”. Norquay you can still see the grass. 2-4 cm a day max so far. Not like last year, unfortunately, where everybody was open almost 100% first week of November. This is an ordinary year. Lets stay positive but realistic.

  2. Don’t forget Sunday River and Sugarloaf in Maine! They both just opened, first on the East Coast (sorry Holiday Valley!)

  5. Things are looking up in Alberta. Louise “open” with 1 chair, 1 green run but surely more this weekend. Norquay closed until Dec. 7. Sunshine open with 6 chairs, 55 runs! Kicking Horse (B.C.) with lots of snow but still sticking to a Dec. 7 open date.
