Contador to Astana

Per Velonews, Tour de France winner Alberto Contador has confirmed with Astana, following director sportif Johan Bruyneel. This move was expected after it was announced that Bruyneel was taking over Astana following the demise of Discovery. Other team Discovery riders are expected to make the move over to Astana as well, including Janez Brajkovic and American Levi Leipheimer (but there has been no mention of super-domestique Yaroslov Popovich).

Already a rising star, Contador solidified his position among elite young cyclists by electrifying spectators in the Tour de France, using out-of-this-world acceleration up the slopes of the Alps and Pyrenees. He waged epic battles with yellow jersey wearer Michael Rasmussen before finally faltering during the last mountain stage of the Tour. Of course Rasmussen would go on to lose the yellow jersey to Contador due to doping allegations, allowing Contador to not only win the white jersey (best young rider), but also the yellow jersey as well.

Astana will have a powerful squad built around Contador for next year’s Tour de France, and hopefully they can help Contador capture his second win (and his first minus the controversy). Is Andreas Kloden still under contract with Astana? Kloden, Leiphemier, Contador, and Popo would be a ridiculous team, assuming they could co-exist. Should make for an exciting season!
