UPDATED: Blue Mountain Scales Down Mountain Biking

Poking through the Blue Mountain website today I found a slightly cryptic letter about the resort canceling a mountain bike event and ‘de-tuning’ certain trails/areas.

“We have been experiencing difficulties in influencing the appropriate risk taking behavior,” the letter says, adding it is making the transition into a “more controlled access facility”. The letter mentioned several new policies:

  • The “Progression Park” and “Spark-o-rama” have been dismantled, and a collection of trails have been “de-tuned”. I assume this means they’ve toned down some of the jumps?
  • Riders aged 16 and under must either be accompanied by a guide, parent or ‘green stamped’ by a guide to
    ride on their own.
  • The Grip N Rip MTB Fest event has been canceled.

Sounds like some pretty big changes. Over on dropmachine there is some borderline unintelligible conversation regarding what’s going on. It sounds like a spate of injuries are forcing Blue to reconsider how they approach downhill MTB.
