My ACL Tear and Recovery

10 Weeks Later: ACL Recovery Update

This has become a popular page for people seeking ACL recovery information and experiences with arthroscopic ACL replacement surgery. If you’re interested in learning more about how I have been dealing with my ACL recovery, please check out these posts. Thanks for coming by!

Below is the original post:

It’s 10 weeks out, and my knee feels great. It feels like there’s nothing wrong. When I was walking around with a torn ACL my knee felt shaky and unstable; now it feels solid again. But beneath the surface, there’s still lots of work to do.

Some tidbits from the past couple of weeks:

  • Golfed a full 18 holes pain-free. I hadn’t tried golfing since April, about three weeks after my surgery, when I limped around the course after painfully tearing some scar tissue in my hamstring. I’m in much better condition now.
  • Did some mountain biking in the Don Valley. Fell off my bike. Somehow I don’t think I’m supposed to be doing that sort of “cycling” so I have to be careful to take it easy.
  • Met someone who’s had the procedure done on both knees and realized I was very, very lucky to be getting physiotherapy at a hospital (which is covered by the government but is usually accompanied by huge long waits). She had big physio bills.
  • My RIGHT quad, the one that was not operated on, got really sore after biking. I realized 120-pound leg presses using only my bad leg was good for post-operative recovery purposes, but also led to me ignoring my good leg. Oooops.
  • Had a followup appointment today with the surgeon, who told me I could look forward to a summer of biking, walking, swimming.. and nothing else. No running, he said, until late September (six months out). He better let me snowboard… *shakes fist*

Two and a half months down.

  1. I’m so glad to hear how well your recovery is going! I know you would just die if you couldn’t be out moving and being physical (which has also probably helped your recovery)…
I have to admit, I was pretty worried when I last saw you, during your limping stage… I’m glad to hear that it’s improved so much.

  2. Thanks! Yeah, it’s actually really frustrating. I’m in great shape and the leg feels fine but I totally have to take it easy for a few more months.
No more limp, brace or pain.

  3. Glad to hear that the leg is getting better. The physiotherapy is more important than the surgery in the long run because if you don’t strengthen it back up, the surgery won’t do any good. Gotta suck working out the bad leg and having the good one hurting.

  5. [...] I tried golfing three weeks after having my ACL reconstructed, with painful results. But 10 weeks after the surgery, it was all good. [...]
