If you’ve ever looked at a ski resort map you’ve probably seen the work of James Niehues. He’s designed the trail maps of virtually every major ski resort on the planet. The Vail Trail has put togeter a great profile of him; there’s some really neat details on how he got started (he took up painting when he was sick as a kid) and how he gets the job done (aerial photographs and a lot of skiing). Sounds like a very neat job.
I remember his art was for sale at the Toronto Ski and Snowboard Show last year. I actually think a framed picture of the massive Whistler and Blackcomb trail maps would actually be pretty cool in certain room configurations.
