This article on snowboarding with headphones on reminded me that music is something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while. I also thought it was interesting because it lists Shaun White’s “Top Ten Playlist”, which I assume means his top ten tracks to listen to while riding/competing. They are:
1. “Comm Breakdown” Led Zeppelin
2. “Love Me Two Times” The Doors
3. “Fortunate Son” CCR
4. “Fade to Black” Metallica
5. “Hardest Button” The White Stripes
6. “Andy Warhol” David Bowie
7. “Back in Black” AC/DC
8. “Heart of the City” Jay Z
9. “Dance Macabre” The Faint
10. “Tangerine” Led Zeppelin
The kid certainly likes to rock.
Now, riding with headphones is something I really got into this year. I’ve set up a playlist on my iPod Nano simply titled ‘riding!’ that contains about 100 songs. If I hit ‘play’ and keep it running all day, I get most of a day’s worth of tunes I really, really like. Probably the ones palyed most were (in no particular order)
- Reunited (Wu-Tang Clan: listening to the Wu Tang Forever album while riding is so awesome it’s not even funny. Seriously.)
- Nimrod’s Sun (Pixies)
- Feel Good Inc. (Gorillaz)
- Used to Love Her (Guns ‘N Roses)
- D.A.R.E. (Gorillaz)
- Like a Boss (Slim Thug: kind of an inside joke and kind of a long story)
- The Kids Don’t Get It (Tragically Hip, from their newest album)
- Rosetta Sonted (Tool)
- It’s Only Devine Right (The New Pornographers)
- Sacramento (Deep Dish — one day I’ll expand on my love for house/techno/electro and previous DJing experience. I keep meaning to put a set up on the site)
Anyone else got a playlist?
Like most folks in the article say, I don’t find riding with headphones a distraction nor a risk. I hate to sound hokey, but the skier’s code says you need to ride in control, and be cognizant of what’s going on in front of you; headphones or not, it’s difficult to figure out what’s going on behind you. When you put headphones on, you more or less eliminate the ability to hear what’s going on behind you; but does it really matter? As the article suggests, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find a lot of accidents that can be attributed to the fact someone was listening to music at the same time.
i think im a weirdo on this one, i like to listen to my board on the snow, plus taking the phones off when someone wants your attention is a pain, if i rode backcountry i would probably have a different opinion ……… anyone still riding????
I usually listen to Disturbed, Godsmack, Tool, and Sevendust when I am out. Usually whole CD’s not individual songs.
Anything by Jack Johnson!
