Well, conditions are improving here in Ontario; Blue Mountain is back up and running, albeit with only three runs (which is one more than yesterday). Mt. St. Louis Moonstone has about half the place open. Is it enough for me to head back up there to ride? Definitely not, especially with Whistler on the horizon.
Throughout this warm spell, I have found it odd that Blue Mountain has remained closed or limited to two open runs. Blue has some of the best snowmaking equipment in Ontario, but it appeared to me that Moonstone and Horseshoe both had more runs open throughout this spell lousy weather. I guess part of it has to be economics; Moonstone, for example, is only a ski hill. There are no hotels, spas or bars. Blue, on the other hand, is a four-season resort. So although they took a hit with regards to booking rates and revenues earned from skiers and snowboarders, Blue could still rely on the fact that folks would head up there to do other things: party in a chalet, drink in the village, hang out at a spa, etc. On the other hand, if Moonstone doesn’t open… it doesn’t make money. And this is the busiest time of the year for ski resorts.
