Well, Saturday is the big day: first turns for me here in Ontario. The plan is to head to Blue Mountain or Moostone, depending on who’s got more runs open. I don’t think either opening will be phenomenal; Moonstone, for example, is only planning to open three runs and two lifts. But, it’s still better than nothing!
The funny thing is: I’m actually terrified. I’ve got two snowboarding trips planned, and if anything happens to my knee, I’ll ruin them. But if I don’t test my knee (that is, if it can’t handle snowboarding), I’ll probably just wreck it the first day of one of my trips anyway.
I played ultimate frisbee all summer, though, and have also been running a fair bit; not to mention I went riding in Whistler last year the day after I hurt it. So I’m fairly confident I will be okay.
If its anything like the friend I mentioned in another comment who did his ACL, you should be OK. He was riding just a couple of weeks before his op with his knee strapped up. He did get some pain, but not enough to prevent him riding.
I would definitely invest in a knee support of some kind, and maybe not do too much heavy impact stuff like jumping.
But other than that, you should be fine. Good luck.
Glad to hear your getting out finally. I know the feeling … sitting there staring at your board, checking screws, packing stuff up so you can leave within 5 min if you had to. Im not sure what your travel time is to Killington Vermont but they are planning 30 trails for Saturday and theyre getting a storm in as we type. 2 weeks ago they had 16 trails and 6 lifts … and it was plenty then. Its a hike for me too (3.5 hrs), but what else do we have to do.
P.S. – Adam, love your site too!
Wooo freakin Hooo!
Blue is finally getting some snow …they expect up to 15cm of natural snow by Friday night.
Playing Ultimate full-out should give your knees more of a workout than most snowboarding activities – so you shouldn’t have any problem on Saturday.
Have fun! – Can’t wait to get up there myself …
JB.
Thanks.
I believe Snowboard Canada Magazine listed Killington as the best early season option on the east coast. I believe it would be an 8-10 hour drive, but I’ll get my fix next weekend at Tremblant; they’re already up to 11 trails, and I’m hoping they’ll have many more open in a week’s time.
I’ve got a big-assed knee brace complete with metal rods, so I think I’m OK in that respect.. I’m more nervous than anything else. I think/hope it will be OK.
