Jake Burton Designs A Run

This is cool. Jake Burton and some of his team riders have developed The Stash, a new run set to open at Northstar-at-Tahoe resort. The run will feature “a fun, natural environment that features tree runs, jibs and road jumps constructed with wood logs and other materials native to the Lake Tahoe region,” according to [...]

Vermont Ski Resorts Are Upgrading

From what I understand, Vermont had pretty sucky weather last winter. When I went in February, it rained more than it snowed, and I got the sense the 2005/2006 season was not as powder-laden as years past. But whatever. It’s a new season, and according to this article, several Vermont resorts have lots to cheer [...]

Snow on the Way in Ontario?

Oh Weather Network, please let your 14-day forecast for Toronto be true.

Snowboarding and the Concept of ‘Flow’

I recently started reading up on the psychology of ‘flow‘,  a term coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to describe a mental state a person reaches when fully immersed in (and enjoying) what they are doing. You know when you feel like you’re ‘in the zone’ when you’re doing something you enjoy? When time seems to [...]

Wondering When Your Favourite Ski Resort Will Open?

Chances are SnoCountry knows. They’ve released a pretty good list of upcoming openings; many Ontario ski resorts are notably missing. The ones that are listed won’t open until mid-December. D’oh! With the incessant rain we’ve been having, I can’t see anything opening this month.

Okay, Not *Everyone* is Opening Early

I just noticed that Tremblant has revised their opening date. It’s been changed to November 24; originally, they were planning to open November 17. In other news, Mammoth Mountain is open.

On My List of Things to Try: Cat Boarding / Cat Skiing

The fall issue of Snowboard Canada is totally badass. The rider profiles are hilarious, the photos are amazing, and the articles on destinations like Poland are interesting reads. But there’s one article that caught my attention in particular: their guide to ‘catboarding’, as they call it. I’m not sure what the correct term is, but [...]

Urban Terrain Parks: A Viable Business Idea?

Ever since I blogged about Denver’s temporary urban terrain park, I’ve been thinking about the idea and its feasibility in other cities. Large, flat cities like Toronto still have large skier and snowboarder populations. Many skiers and snowboarders, particularly the younger ones, have to head out on road trips to local mountains a couple of [...]

It’s Official: Whistler to Open Early

Well, it’s official. Thanks to some recent storms, Whistler Mountain will open several days early. Blackcomb, however, remains on track to open November 23. From the snow alert I just received: “This past weekend, over 75 cm (over 2 feet) of snow has fallen on Whistler Blackcomb Mountains and the forecast is for snow to [...]

This Isn’t Exactly Snowboard-Related, But..

… I’ve got a thing for marching bands playing Radiohead tunes. I guess it only counts as ‘snowboard-related’ if you listen to Radiohead on the slopes. Via: VideoSift
