Snowboarding
Is Global Warming Hurting the World Cup Ski Season?
Global warming is in the news once again after the FIS was forced to cancel several men’s World Cup downhill ski races. The culrpit? A general lack of snow in Europe. The forecast? “There’s a good chance the World Cup will be on hold for quite a while,” said Phil McNichol, head men’s coach of the U.S. team.
In a separate article, the Toronto Star looks at why some famous skiers are worried skiing/snowboarding could soon become a thing of the past.
There are some chilling (pardon the pun) statistics in the article:
“A United Nations report released three years ago warned that downhill
skiing could disappear completely at some resorts as early as 2030, and
that other resorts could see their villages cut off from their slopes
because of a retreating snow line. The National Science Foundation
reported last February that recent studies showed some mountain ranges
in Europe and the Western United States have experienced decreases of
50 to 75 per cent in snowfall amounts in recent decades.”
That’s not good. And the weather up here is certainly not convincing me that all is well with our environment.
Enjoy it while you can. There’s always going to be snow somewhere in the world to ride, but some villages/resorts are going to be screwed!
I don’t disagree!
