If you’re a Whistler local, I think you will find this article extremely interesting. If you visit occasionally (like me), you will still find it interesting. And even if you haven’t been to Whistler, you’re likely to find the story of how a local ski hill became a world famous ski resort interesting , anyway; it’s an issue many of today’s ski towns have had to struggle with at one point or another.
The article is a review of V0N 1B0: General Delivery, Whistler, B.C. (V0N 1B0 is actually ‘von eye-bow’, apparently, to the locals.) From what I can tell by the fairly lengthy, winding review, it’s a book about the life and death of small-time Whistler, and details what it was like from a local’s perspective to watch the sleepy ski community turn into a super-sleek, corporate ski resort.
But even without reading the book itself, the review really kept me interested. I guess it’s because I have an inherent interest in Whistler, and because it presented a wide variety of compelling content and information:
- If I understand correctly, the legendary Boot Pub closed down at the end of last season. The Boot was a place I never visited, but my local cousins in the Whistler area always raved about. Apparently, it was one of those out-of-the-way places frequented by folks who actually lived and worked in Whistler, where Thursday could be ‘music night’ and Friday ’stripper night’; I always meant to check it out, and now I can’t. Argh.
- There’s a collection of photos that accompany the article; one is called ‘crying snowboarder’. I wonder if that was actually the case when the photo was snapped.
- Some of the Whistler/Blackcomb runs that sound dirty (like ‘Cougar Milk’) were apparently meant to be dirty. How about that.
Anyway, I found the article to be an enthralling read for no one specific reason. If you’ve been to Whistler, I think you’ll find it worth the read too. And maybe you’ll even buy the book. Some info on finding the book is here.
