I ride with mine occasionally.  I rarely use the cell phone on days when I am skiing, but keep it on my.
Here is something to look into though--a camelback with storage pockets and a built in electronics spot for an iPod.  I keep my cell in the shoulder holder of the camelback so I can hear it and also have a Motorola radio speaker/mic on my other shoulder strap.  I usually only keep one earbud in so that I am still aware of everything else.
