Eastern Snowboarding

The 2006-2007 Canadian Snow Report: Looking Lousy?

In my recent conversations with others on the topic of snowboarding, I have heard this refrain many times:

“Last year, the weather just sucked.”

The above line specifically refers to the weather in Southern Ontario during last year’s snowboarding season. By ‘sucked’, everyone is referring to a lack of snow. I’m always slightly taken aback by this, because I seem to recall riding at Moonstone pretty early in the season; though now that I consult the archives, it was late November. I suppose an earlier opening would have been ideal, but it rarely snows before November in Southern Ontario.

Anyway, to prove/disprove the above critique of Southern Ontario weather, I set off to the Environment Canada website to see if I could rustle up some data on historical snowfalls in Barrie, Ontario, where Blue Mountain is located. While I couldn’t find the data I was looking for, I did happen across a few maps predicting precipitation levels across Canada for the next three to six months. And according to Environment Canada, the outlook isn’t great; below-normal precipitation levels are expected in Southern Ontario, the Montreal area, the Rockies and Whistler.  Let us pray to the snow gods that Environment Canada is incorrect!
