Snowboarders and Skiiers Getting Younger, Report Says

According to this entry at First Tracks, a new National Ski Areas Association National Demographic Study says the American snowsports scene is getting younger, and is also becoming more interested in snowboarding.

Among the highlights:

  • The number of kids under 18 participating in skiing and snowboarding rising to
15.5 percent in 2005/06, up from 12.9 percent the previous season.
  • The
average age of snowsports participants dropped to 35.1. That seems high to me; must be all the skiiers!  *grin*
  • Snowboard participation was up three percent after several years of “sluggish growth”.

That last stat surprised me. I guess I always assumed snowboard participation had been growing like gangbusters for several years, though I haven’t done much research into the topic. Good news all around for ski resorts, I suppose.
