Thumbs Down to Great Britain

(Yes, that’s a “thumbs down” on the map of Great Britain.)

Thumbs down to Great Britain, who is reportedly cutting their Olympic snowboarding budget by almost half despite great improvements in Turin. And check out this amazingly defeatist quote from a British official, as reported by the folks at worldsnowboardguide.com:

Our approach to Winter Olympic and Paralympic funding is
unashamedly based on our ‘No Compromise’ approach. The good news is we
have been able to increase the overall funding for winter sports by 20%
compared with the previous four year cycle, but we have to allocate
this to those sports that have shown they can deliver and have the
future potential to win medals on the world stage. We have to be
realistic, Great Britain will never be a top winter sports nation but
we can achieve success if we target our investment effectively at the
right athletes
.”

Unashamedly? Ever heard of investments? Way to increase spending for ice skating! Curling! Skeleton! Events people care about every four years! Aren’t most sponsorship opportunities with companies who want serious exposure to younger demographics? Man, these guys just don’t get it. If I were them, I would want to invest in what is becoming one of the world’s most popular sports, and not in sports no-one really cares about (although I’d love to try shooting down a luge headfirst one day like those skeleton nuts).

There would be serious controversy in Canada or the United States if a dumb move like this was made across the pond.

You know, I’d love to get Dan Wakeham’s comments. Perhaps he can be our first interview.
