Report on Resort Improvements
It’s summertime, which means many ski resorts are busy upgrading their facilities for next season. Here’s a look at what some resorts are doing:
- Steamboat in Colorado is replacing a triple with a quad, and is opening a new trail.
- As reported here earlier, Whistler Blackcomb is building a new lift, the Piccolo Express, to open new terrain around the Harmony area.
- Holiday Valley in Western New York is expanding some of their infrastructure, and is also planning to build a new lift.
- Mountain High in California is also working on some improvements.
I’ve also got a question about Blue Mountain in Collingwood: ever notice a portion of the mountain is marked for “future expansion” .. ? Does anyone know when the expansion might take place? This thread appears to indicate it might be a while.
Know of any more ski resort improvements? Keep me updated!
they haven’t specified any guaranteed infrastructure deadline for construction. Remember that really crap shred season 2 or some years ago? it was like 20 degrees in January. no snow at all until like late february. they were going to do it the summer after that shred season but there profit margin was very thin that year due to there moneymaker christmas holiday shot to shit because of no snow at all. they say now they might do it for the 08/09 season but it’s now almost fall so they’ve got to get digging those lift tower foundations pretty soon before frost at least. i was really exited for those nice trails serviced by a six-pack, i heard they were even going to move the l-hill lift over there to supplement the six-pack and replace l-hill with a six. now my hope is gone, unless they start immediately digging now one of these days, which i don’t think they will.
whiteface mountain in lake placid is embarking on the lookout mountain project, it’s a quad and apparently lookout mountain will be 2900 vertical feet alone. along with all the other whiteface trails, it’s going to be a icing on the cake. unlike Blue Mountain, they had the trails cut in like 2 weeks and are building a quad or triple now. they didn’t let the trails sit for decades until the anticipation died. did you know blue mountain cut the orchard trails in 1986? long time to spend lots of money keeping the grass cut for nothing. that’s exactly 22 years those trails have been unserviced since being cut.
