Snowboarding

I Thought I Would Mountain Bike More.

Golf is a game I have wanted to learn for many years. Like snowboarding, however, the start-up costs can be high and it can be a pain in the ass to learn. These two factors prevented me from really picking it up, although I would occasionally head to a driving range with some buddies to kill a few balls with a driver and an iron.

Golf is a game my dad has wanted to learn for many years. For a variety of reasons, it’s something he never picked up, either. But this summer, we did something about it. I got my dad a set of beginner clubs, and got myself a set too. Then I signed us up for lessons with a CPGA pro.

We’ve only been to three classes, but holy crap have we learned a lot. If you ever want to pick up golf, I highly recommend starting with lessons. That way, you don’t have to go back and re-engineer your swing when you find out you’ve been doing it wrong. Golf is funny, it’s all about swinging the clubs in a fashion that feels totally uncomfortable; but totally uncomfortable is actually proper form.

I was very nervous and slightly intimidated before our first lesson, but I made a wise choice when I signed us up: a picked a five-week, beginner, group crash course. This kept the costs down ($100 per person for five weeks), made you feel more comfortable about your inability to swing a club (because no-one else in the group can) and you still get lots of attention from a pro – in this case, a dude named Gary Kent, who is very, very good at swinging golf clubs.
