Keeping Active With A Torn ACL

It’s been a really busy week, so I haven’t been around much; apologies! On the upside, I have slowly but surely been returning to my regular sporting routines, torn ACL and all. Of note recently:

  • I’m now on two softball teams. Softball is pretty easy on the ACL as long as I don’t land on my left leg when jumping. Running and hitting are not a problem.
  • I’ve taken up golf. I had my first lesson with a kickass pro yesterday. Also easy on the knee. I’m now a badass with the seven iron.
  • I’m running again. I’ve done a few 5ks, but not non-stop. I’ve had to stop for a couple of breaks each time, but moreso because of my lousy cardio conditioning now that I’ve stopped working out regularly.
  • I’d been debating making a return to ultimate recently, and last night I saw a guy on the other team with this crazy $2,000 brace. I asked him what was wrong with his knee and he told me he had a torn ACL… FOR TEN YEARS! Feeling inspired, I played, and actually did quite well (scored a point, threw for a point, made a stupid dive that probably almost cost me). My knee feels a little weak today, and I  have to be cautions playing ultimate with all the running and cutting. But it felt so good to be playing intense sports again.

It’s great to be active! I have to be careful that I don’t “overdo it”, but I’m glad the surgeon gave me the OK to pretty much do what I like until the surgery.
