Google Trends combines some pretty neat technologies to provide insight into what people are using Google to find. Previously I mentioned the Google Zeitgeist, but Google Trends takes it to the next level: it’s kind of like the Zeitgeist on crack.
I used Google Trends to query “snowboarding”, and got some pretty interesting results.

The above graph depicts search and news volume trends between 2003 and 2006. Most spikes reference specific news events. The last spike, for example, took place when U.S. women won medals in snowboarding. But what I found most interesting was the demographic data. According to Google, those who queried “snowboarding” the most came from the following cities:
Salt Lake City, UT USA
Denver, CO USA
Edmonton Canada
Calgary Canada
Vancouver Canada
Portland, OR USA
Seattle, WA USA
San Diego, CA USA
Auckland New Zealand
Minneapolis, MN USA
Now here are the top 10 countries that queried “snowboarding” the most:
New Zealand
Canada
United Kingdom
United States
Australia
Finland
Switzerland
Belgium
Netherlands
Germany
And finally, the top languages:
English
Finnish
Dutch
German
French
Italian
Spanish
I didn’t see anything particularly shocking, but I was slightly surprised that New Zeleand led the world in snowboarding queries, and that Finnish was the second-most popular language. If I eventually build another snowboarding-related website, I will certainly heed this information.
