The News

Yesterday was a bad day for Toronto commuters. The weather was boiling hot (according to The Weather Network, it felt like 41c by noon) and transit workers staged a wildcat strike, so there was no bus or subway service. Luckily, I was able to bike it to the orthopaedic surgeon’s office to get the news [...]

Tomorrow’s the Big Day

Tomorrow is The Big Day.
Tomorrow I will find out what’s wrong with the knee.
Tomorrow, I think, the orthopaedic surgeon will tell me that I have an ACL tear and that need to be “scoped“.
It’s kind of funny, actually, that I’ve had to wait three or four weeks to find out what’s wrong when a couple [...]

Who Likes Snowboarding? Finland, Apparently

Google Trends combines some pretty neat technologies to  provide insight into what people are using Google to find. Previously I mentioned the Google Zeitgeist, but Google Trends takes it to the next level: it’s kind of like the Zeitgeist on crack.
I used Google Trends to query “snowboarding”, and got some pretty interesting results.

The above graph [...]

Afterbang

He may be writing about skating more than boarding with spring in the air, but Gavin’s Afterbang is a  snowboarding blog I recently discovered that looks good and reads well. I recently made a decision to try and use more images, and write longer articles; Gavin’s blog does both, and throws in a really nice [...]

Weather Vs. the Ski and Snowboard Business

I was initially going to write a post about what a great year it was for the ski resport industry in North America. Then I realized it wasn’t entirely great. Sure, the west coast had a pretty good year. Intrawest cleaned up in BC and Colorado thanks to decent conditions (though a strong Canadian dollar [...]

The Lofty Canadian Dollar and Riding in the US

So as most (Canadian) readers know, the loonie is kicking butt and taking names. As this article points out, that’s good news for American ski resorts (big ups to Jay Peak!), but bad news for Canadian ones.
Although I am already in the process of planning our next trip to Whistler, I can’t shake the feeling [...]

The Ongoza Project

Happy weekend!
I got an email a few days ago from the folks at The Ongoza Project, a snowboarding website that’s trying to form a Myspace-like community using photos, blogs and more. I haven’t had time to sign up for a profile myself, but I know the site is looking for riders to check it out. [...]

Post 101

This is post 101. That mean’s I’ve surprassed 100 posts on snowboarding! Well, okay, maybe not all the posts were about snowboarding; but I must have been close.
Interestingly, the most popular topic by far has been my MRI. Doesn’t anyone want to talk about snowboarding and snow and stuff?
Seriously though, I appreciate all [...]

I Like Snowboarding Film Antics

I find there are typically two types of snowboarding films: the
high-budget,
I-got-dropped-from-a-helicopter-and-rode-down-the-side-of-a-mountain
movies, and the low-budget,
here-is-me-going-off-a-kicker-in-a-backyard-then-throwing-up-later
films. epi films seems to have an upcoming movie that mixes a bit of
both. The teaser has some good tricks, lots of antics and gratuitous swearing. My kinda film!

On Segways and Awesomeness

Spring has not gone well. I’ve hurt my knee, I have been a victim of
identity theft, and worst of all… I can’t snowboard. But last week, I
got to try something that rivals the Freebord in its complete awesomeness:
Segways!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, Segways are totally badass.
Imagine being able to tool around a city on a scooter that [...]
