Four Resorts Say: No Riders Allowed
When I went to Kissing Bridge last year, I was shocked to encounter a “skiiing only” run. How, and why, did they want to discriminate against snowboarders?
Well, it turns out that some resorts still do. According to this article, there’s still at least four large resorts in the United States that disallow snowboarding – period.
On one hand, this makes sense to me. There is a lot of animosity between skiiers and snowboarders. I have heard many from each group accuse the other of being reckless and full of attitude. And given snowboarding is a relatively new sport, its recent explosion (around here, anyway) has not led to an always-warm welcome.
On the other hand: is this good for business? At least one resort quoted in the article seems to think so, feeling it has received rock-solid support (and probably increased patronage, I would guess) from skiiers. But given there are 6.3 million snowboarders in the United States (and only 6.8 million skiiers), resorts are choosing to ignore a significant market.
