This weekend I headed to Moonstone, where the conditions were probably better than I had ever seen. Ontario is famous for its short, fast, icy runs; but this weekend there was plenty of snow.
It was odd to move from Whistler runs to Ontario runs, where you were top to bottom on a hill in three minutes. One of the few upsides, however, is that most Ontario hills have amazingly fast ski lifts to ensure you get back to the top quickly.
Anyway, this weekend marked the first time I got some decent experience in a terrain park. After a little bit of nudging from a friend, I convinced myself it was time to try some real jumps, after hopping off small kickers for a few days in Whistler after limited success.
I pulled off the first two jumps, one of which was much taller than me, with relative ease. I didn’t get as much air as I would have liked, and in both cases landed on the back end of the top, right before the back half of the jump slopes down. Still, not bad for a first try.
On the third try my friend convinced me to try an indy grab, which didn’t work out too badly – I actually touched the board – but skid for a second on my butt on the landing. Thankfully I was able to keep moving and actually stood up and kept going… so big embarassments were avoided all around.
