My Destinations That Aren’t Whistler or Vermont

… there will be many other riding destinations this winter (or that’s
the plan, anyway). Some are good, some are decent, and some don’t
qualify as anything beyond a hill.

They are, in no particular order:

Mount St. Louis Moonstone:
The “Mount” in this name is misleading. The vertical of the hill is 750
feet or so. I did a fair bit of riding here, and it’s pretty good for
Southern Ontario. The lifts are faster than any I’ve seen anywhere,
which is a good thing given the runs are only a couple of minutes long.
Not bad for an hour’s drive out of Toronto.

Blue Mountain: Ontario’s Intrawest ski
resort. I’ve never visited in the winter, but I’ve been told it is very
good (for Southern Ontario, anyway). Seem to have a pretty large range
of runs.

Mont Tremblant:
Another Intrawest resort. This one is about a five-hour drive from
Toronto. I’ve never been to this one either but have heard nothing but
good things.

Kissing Bridge:
This one is in western New York, probably about a two-hour drive. I was
really, really surprised to see this calibre riding so close to
Toronto. A wide range of hills, fairly long runs and long operating
hours all ensure I’ll be going back. Check it out.

And last but not least…

North York Ski Centre:
You may think I’m kidding, but I’m not. I bet I get out there once or
twice just to get a few turns in, or to teach a friend. It may not be
great, but it’s where I learned, and it’s in the middle of the city,
making it a fairly unique experience.
